Quebec driving test practice

Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) runs driver licensing in Quebec. The SAAQ sets the rules and runs the tests. Quebec is the one province where a government approved driving course is mandatory before you can be licensed, so a driving school sits inside the path rather than beside it.

The licence journey in Quebec

Each stage has to be held before the next one opens, so the order below is also the timetable. Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) sets every hold period on it.

Quebec is the only province where a government approved driving course is required before you can be licensed, so the path starts at a driving school rather than at a test counter. The knowledge test opens only after a long wait on the learner licence, the exam is scored section by section, and the right turn on a red light that the rest of the province allows is prohibited across the island of Montreal. The signs are in French. These notes cover what is different about learning to drive in Quebec.

  1. Learner, Learner licence

The first stage, and it starts with the mandatory driving course rather than with a test. You drive with an accompanying driver who holds a valid licence, and you only become eligible for the knowledge test once you have held this licence for 10 months.

  2. Probationary, Probationary licence

You pass the road test and drive alone under conditions, including a zero alcohol limit that applies for the whole stage.

  3. Full, Full driver licence

The full licence, once the probationary period is behind you and the conditions attached to it come off.

Common questions

What people ask about testing in Quebec, answered with the source underneath.

When can I take the SAAQ knowledge test?

After you have held your learner licence for 10 months. The wait is part of the design, not a booking backlog, so there is no way to bring it forward.

What does the SAAQ knowledge test cost?

About $11.20, the smallest knowledge test fee among the four provinces we cover in depth.

Is a driving course mandatory in Quebec?

Yes. Quebec is the only province where a government approved driving course is required before you can be licensed. Every other province treats driver education as optional, usually rewarded with a shorter waiting period.

How is the SAAQ exam scored?

By section. The exam is divided into parts and each part has its own pass requirement, so clearing the exam means clearing every section rather than reaching one overall total.

What happens if I fail a section of the SAAQ exam?

You wait 28 days before you can take that section again. Planning matters here more than in any other province, because a single weak section costs you a month.

What are the Quebec licence stages?

Learner licence first, taken alongside the mandatory driving course, then a probationary licence once you pass the road test, then the full licence.

Why does Quebec take longer than other provinces?

Two rules stack up. The mandatory course sets the pace at the start, and the knowledge test only opens 10 months into the learner licence. Newcomers who were licensed elsewhere in Canada are often surprised by both.
