The licence journey in Quebec

Each stage has to be held before the next one opens, so the order below is also the timetable. Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) sets every hold period on it.

Quebec is the only province where a government approved driving course is required before you can be licensed, so the path starts at a driving school rather than at a test counter. The knowledge test opens only after a long wait on the learner licence, the exam is scored section by section, and the right turn on a red light that the rest of the province allows is prohibited across the island of Montreal. The signs are in French. These notes cover what is different about learning to drive in Quebec.

  1. Learner, Learner licence

    The first stage, and it starts with the mandatory driving course rather than with a test. You drive with an accompanying driver who holds a valid licence, and you only become eligible for the knowledge test once you have held this licence for 10 months.

  2. Probationary, Probationary licence

    You pass the road test and drive alone under conditions, including a zero alcohol limit that applies for the whole stage.

  3. Full, Full driver licence

    The full licence, once the probationary period is behind you and the conditions attached to it come off.
