The licence journey in Ontario

Each stage has to be held before the next one opens, so the order below is also the timetable. Ontario Ministry of Transportation sets every hold period on it.

Ontario tests through DriveTest, a private operator working under contract to the ministry. DriveTest publishes two or three knowledge test sections and a total score of at least 80 percent. The rules that catch people out here are Ontario rules: a school bus rule that changes with the shape of the road, and a right turn on a red light that visitors from most of the world find alarming. These notes cover what is different about driving and testing in Ontario.

  1. G1, G1 learner licence

    The first stage. You pass the G1 knowledge test, then drive only with a fully licensed supervising driver beside you and no alcohol in your system.

    Held for 12 months8 months with approved driver education

  2. G2, G2 probationary licence

    You pass your first road test and drive alone, with conditions still attached. Most new Ontario drivers spend the longest part of the journey here.

  3. G, Full G licence

    The full licence. A second road test covers higher speed driving, and the remaining conditions come off once you pass it.

How long do I have to hold a G1 before the road test?
