The licence journey in Ontario

Each stage has to be held before the next one opens, so the order below is also the timetable. Ontario Ministry of Transportation sets every hold period on it.

Ontario tests through DriveTest, a private operator working under contract to the ministry, so the counter, the kiosk and the road test examiner all belong to the same contracted network rather than to a government office. The rules that catch people out here are Ontario rules: a knowledge test scored in two halves that pass or fail on their own, a school bus rule that changes with the shape of the road, and a right turn on a red light that visitors from most of the world find alarming. These notes cover what is different about driving and testing in Ontario.

  1. G1, G1 learner licence

    The first stage. You pass the G1 knowledge test, then drive only with a fully licensed supervising driver beside you and no alcohol in your system.

    Held for 12 months8 months with approved driver education

  2. G2, G2 probationary licence

    You pass your first road test and drive alone, with conditions still attached. Most new Ontario drivers spend the longest part of the journey here.

  3. G, Full G licence

    The full licence. A second road test covers higher speed driving, and the remaining conditions come off once you pass it.

How many questions are on the G1 test?

Forty. The kiosk gives you 20 questions on road signs and 20 on rules of the road, and it scores the two sections separately.

How many mistakes can you make on the G1 test?

Four in each section. You need 16 correct out of 20 in road signs and 16 correct out of 20 in rules of the road, so a fifth wrong answer in either section ends your chance of passing that section.

What does the G1 test cost in Ontario?

The standard package is $159.75. It covers the G1 knowledge test, the vision test and your first G2 road test, so the road test is already paid for. A knowledge test retake on its own costs $15.75.

What happens if I pass one section and fail the other?

You have not passed the G1. Both sections have to reach 16 out of 20 on the same attempt, and each is judged on its own, so the next step is a retake at $15.75.

How long do I have to hold a G1 before the road test?

Twelve months, or eight months if you finish an approved driver education course. The course is the only way to shorten that wait.

How many DriveTest centres are there in Ontario?

More than 55 across the province, all run by the same contracted operator on behalf of the ministry.

Are some DriveTest centres easier than others?

The published results say yes. Road test pass rates measured across Ontario centres span about 30 percentage points from the strongest centre to the weakest, which is why booking location gets argued about so much.

How long does the whole Ontario licence take?

Roughly 20 to 24 months from a fresh G1 to a full G, depending on how fast you clear each hold and how soon you can get a road test booking.
