The licence journey in Ontario

Each stage has to be held before the next one opens, so the order below is also the timetable. Ontario Ministry of Transportation sets every hold period on it.

Ontario tests through DriveTest, a private operator working under contract to the ministry. DriveTest publishes two or three knowledge test sections and a total score of at least 80 percent. The rules that catch people out here are Ontario rules: a school bus rule that changes with the shape of the road, and a right turn on a red light that visitors from most of the world find alarming. These notes cover what is different about driving and testing in Ontario.

  1. G1, G1 learner licence

    The first stage. You pass the G1 knowledge test, then drive only with a fully licensed supervising driver beside you and no alcohol in your system.

  2. G2, G2 probationary licence

    You pass your first road test and drive alone, with conditions still attached. Most new Ontario drivers spend the longest part of the journey here.

What is particular to Ontario

Who writes Ontario tests and who runs them?

The Ministry of Transportation creates the knowledge tests for Ontario licence classes. DriveTest administers them at its centres. That division matters when you read an exam description: the questions come from the ministry, while the details of checking in, sitting the test and getting a result come from DriveTest.

DriveTest offers paper tests at every centre and computer tests at some centres. Staff mark the knowledge test while you are there. A paper result from one centre and a computer result from another follow the same ministry standard. Road test appointments use a separate booking process, even when the knowledge test and road test belong to the same licensing path.

What changes when I move to Ontario with another licence?

DriveTest says a new Ontario resident with a valid licence from another province, state or country may qualify for a licence exchange. That is a different application from starting at G1. The resident must apply for an Ontario licence within 60 days of moving to the province. Bring the existing licence and check the exchange requirements before assuming a G1 test is needed.

The application also includes a declaration that Ontario is your primary residence and that you are legally present in Canada. DriveTest lists that declaration for Class G applications. Driving experience from elsewhere can affect which licence you receive, so the documents proving that experience matter alongside the identity documents used for a new application.

What if my Ontario novice licence is close to expiry?

DriveTest gives new car drivers up to five years to complete the G1, G2 and full G path. A driver approaching that limit while still at G2 may be able to requalify as a G2 by passing the G2 road test again. That grants another five years to finish the path, with road test and licensing fees due.

Expiry is consequential because DriveTest says a person whose novice licence has already expired may have to restart at G1. The requalification option is something to check before the card expires. The G road test is a separate booking and a separate fee from the first G2 road test included in the initial package.

Test results remain valid for one year. If you try again within that year, you retake only the sections that did not meet MTO standards. An extra attempt costs $16.00.

How long do I have to hold a G1 before the road test?

Twelve months, or eight months if you finish an approved driver education course. The course is the only way to shorten that wait.

How long does the whole Ontario licence take?

DriveTest requires time at both G1 and G2. Completing an approved course can shorten the G1 hold, but the G2 hold remains. Road test appointments can add time beyond those minimum periods.
