You need at least 75 percent in each of the 3 sections to pass the SAAQ knowledge test. The SAAQ does not publish a question count for this test. The fee is $13.50 for the knowledge test.

  • You can only sit it after holding a valid learner licence for at least 10 months on the test date.
  • It is all multiple choice, in three sections: the Highway Safety Code; road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals; and behaviours and techniques for driving a passenger vehicle.
  • You need 75 percent on each of the three sections, not one combined score, and a failed test means waiting at least 28 days before you can try again.
  • The mandatory driving course comes first. Without it you do not reach the test at all.

How do I book and pay for the SAAQ Class 5 test?

The SAAQ directs Class 5 knowledge test applicants to make the appointment through SAAQclic. On test day, go to the service outlet selected in the booking and show your learner licence or another piece of photo identification. The test fee is paid there before you sit the exam.

The SAAQ accepts cash, a cheque or money order, and debit at outlets where debit is available. It also accepts authorized bank debits under its stated procedure. Credit cards are not accepted at its service outlets. Someone who normally pays every bill by credit card needs another payment method for this visit.

May I bring a dictionary to the Quebec knowledge test?

The SAAQ allows a paper dictionary without illustrations or handwritten notes. It also allows the material the SAAQ itself supplies. Other documents and electronic devices, including a phone or smart watch, are prohibited in the knowledge exam. Recording or photographing the exam is prohibited too.

A cheating finding causes an automatic failure and a longer retake wait than an ordinary failed section. The SAAQ sets the wait at 90 days after a first cheating incident and 180 days after another one. These rules concern the materials brought into the service outlet as well as anything used while answering questions.

What help can I request for the SAAQ test?

The SAAQ provides French and English recordings of the Class 5 questions and possible answers. A deaf or hard of hearing applicant can request sign-language interpretation for the knowledge test. The SAAQ lists service centres where an interpreter can attend and also offers interpretation by video at other centres that administer knowledge tests.

For special needs beyond those options, the SAAQ asks applicants to call its contact centre before the appointment so staff can arrange the appropriate support. This is a test accommodation request, separate from choosing an exam date in SAAQclic. The SAAQ says the sign-language interpretation it provides for the knowledge exam has no added charge.

What can I do after passing the SAAQ knowledge test?

A pass clears the theory step, but it does not yet grant a probationary Class 5 licence. The SAAQ still requires the learner to complete the driving course and hold the learner licence for at least 12 months before the road test. The road appointment is made separately through SAAQclic.

For that road appointment, the SAAQ asks for the learner licence, the vehicle registration certificate, paper proof of liability insurance and course attestation. The knowledge exam therefore has a practical next step: keep the course documents and plan the vehicle and insurance documents for the later drive. Passing the theory exam alone does not replace any of them.

At a four way stop the order is set by who stopped first. When two drivers stop at the same instant the tie is broken in favour of the vehicle on the right, so the driver beside you goes first. A fixed rule matters here because two drivers guessing at each other is exactly how these collisions happen.
