What this part of the site does
Three plain jobs. Put the figures that are already public on one page with the record they came from and the date we checked them. Ask for the same figures again under freedom of information law, so the numbers stop ageing. Say clearly what we do not have.
One release is published so far: 65 Ontario rows covering the 2022 data year, with 65 centre pages built from them and one study that reads them against the auditor general. The middle centre in that release sits at 73.31%, a figure we work out from the rows rather than quote, because the release does not agree with itself about its own provincial average. That is a small body of data and we are not going to dress it up as more than it is. It grows when a request comes back, not before.
None of it is scraped. Booking systems are not a data source here, they are somebody else's service, and the practice of hammering them is a subject we write about rather than a habit we join.
The datasets
OpenPublishedOntario road test pass rates by centre
65 rows, 2022 data year, sortable
Every DriveTest centre and temporary testing location in the freedom of information release, in a table you can sort by pass rate, by road tests taken or by rank. Each row carries the record it came from and the date we checked it, and 65 of them open into a page of their own.
OpenPublishedOntario centre reputation, against the measured rates
A study, two published records set side by side
It sets the two centres the auditor general named beside their own rows in the release, looks at the ten centres that run the most road tests, and works through what a centre level pass rate can and cannot tell you about the people marking the test.
Not here yet, and why
British Columbia road test results by office
ICBC does not publish per office results. A set was released once under British Columbia freedom of information law and written about in the press, and that is the only public figure anyone has. There is nothing here yet and we are not going to imply otherwise. Not available. Our request is written and has not been filed.
Waiting times by test centre
Reported by the people who book, with the trend over time. We will not scrape a booking system to get it: both of the big operators fight automated access, and the point of this site is to hold the high ground on that. Not started. It would need a data source we are not willing to take.
The requests
Two letters, both written out in full and kept in the repository so anyone can read exactly what was asked for and hold the answer against it. Neither has been filed yet, and this page will say so until the day one is.
Ontario, Ministry of Transportation
Written, not yet filedAsks the ministry for the same fields as the published release, for the most recent years it holds, broken down by centre and by year. The Ontario table came from a request like this one made by somebody else, so we know the records exist and we know they can be released.
The letter is at docs/foi/ontario-fippa-request.md
British Columbia, ICBC
Written, not yet filedAsks ICBC for knowledge and road test counts and pass rates by driver licensing office, by year and by licence class, with the office name and municipality kept so each row can be matched to a place without guesswork.
The letter is at docs/foi/icbc-foi-request.md
The records behind the published figures
Each of these is a public record, except the last, which names arithmetic we do ourselves over rows that already carry one. The verified date is when we last read the figure off it.
