SAAQ, Obtaining a Motorcycle Driver's Licence (Classes 6A, 6B and 6C)verified 2026-08-28

The format above is the one Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) sets, and it is on the page before anything else, because the numbers are what you plan around. Every row carries the record it was read from and the date it was checked.

  • Pass it and you hold a Class 6R learner licence for 18 months, which lets you ride on a closed track and on the road with an instructor from a school the SAAQ recognizes.
  • The test comes in two parts and they pass at different marks. You need 85 percent on the part about operating a motorcycle and 75 percent on the part about the Highway Safety Code and signs, pavement markings and traffic signals.
  • Already hold a Class 5 licence or a probationary licence and you sit only the motorcycle part.
  • The SAAQ does not publish how many questions the test holds, so we do not put a number on it. It says to allow about an hour.
  • Fail and you wait at least 28 days before you can sit it again. That is the longest wait after a failed knowledge test in any of the four provinces we cover in depth.
  • You have to be at least 16, live in Quebec, carry fewer than four demerit points, and bring written consent from a parent or guardian if you are under 18.
  • The knowledge test is only the opening step. A course at a recognized driving school follows, running at least 30 days across 6 hours of theory and 26 hours of riding, and then a closed track test and a road test.

  • 55 questions written for the Motorcycle knowledge test, each with the authority it rests on
  • Free to sit, with no account and nothing held back until you pay
  • Every run free, with the whole bank open and no part held back

Nothing here is timed unless the real exam is timed, and nothing is held back except the answers the real exam holds back too.

One question from the bank, in full

The question, the answer marked, the reason it is the answer, and the authority it rests on. Nothing is held back on this page and nothing is held back in a run.

QuebecRules of the road

You are leaving a gas station on your motorcycle as traffic moves along the road, including another rider approaching nearby. Who has priority?

  1. You enter first because motorcycles can merge quickly
  2. All traffic already on the road has priority, including the other rider
  3. The vehicle nearest the entrance moves first, even from the gas station
  4. The other rider yields because you are waiting at the edge

The answer is B

From a private entrance, you must yield to every road user already travelling on the public road. Traffic on the road may be close before you finish turning or accelerating, and another rider has the same right of way as any other vehicle. Eye contact or an apparent gap does not transfer priority to you, so wait until the entry is clear.

How the Motorcycle knowledge test passes

You can sit it from age 16.

Fees and rules change, so check the record itself before you pay for anything. The date beside each figure is the day we last read it.

What Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) does not publish

These are the fields the licensing body leaves out. They stay blank here rather than being filled with another province's number or with an estimate.

  • No published figure for the question count.
  • No published figure for the pass mark.

A run built on a missing length draws the whole bank instead of guessing at one, and the panel before the first question says so.

Questions people ask about this test

When can I take the SAAQ knowledge test?

After you have held your learner licence for 10 months. The wait is part of the design, not a booking backlog, so there is no way to bring it forward.

What does the SAAQ knowledge test cost?

About $11.20, the smallest knowledge test fee among the four provinces we cover in depth.

Why does Quebec take longer than other provinces?

Two rules stack up. The mandatory course sets the pace at the start, and the knowledge test only opens 10 months into the learner licence. Newcomers who were licensed elsewhere in Canada are often surprised by both.
