DriveTest, Knowledge Tests (Serco Canada Inc., the ministry appointed driver examination provider)verified 2026-08-28

The format above is the one Ontario Ministry of Transportation sets, and it is on the page before anything else, because the numbers are what you plan around. Every row carries the record it was read from and the date it was checked.

  • The questions are multiple choice and they come in two or three parts, one on signs and the rest on motorcycles and the rules of the road.
  • You need 80 percent across the whole test to pass.
  • DriveTest does not publish how many questions the M1 test holds, so we do not put a number on it.
  • A result stands for one year, and a retry inside that year repeats only the parts you did not clear.
  • No earlier licence is needed. Being 16, living in Ontario and passing the eye test are what get you in the chair.
  • If you are taking an approved motorcycle safety course the package does not apply, and you pay $16.00 for the knowledge test plus $9.00 for the 90 day licence.

  • 60 questions written for the M1 knowledge test, each with the authority it rests on
  • Free to sit, with no account and nothing held back until you pay
  • Every run free, with the whole bank open and no part held back

Nothing here is timed unless the real exam is timed, and nothing is held back except the answers the real exam holds back too.

One question from the bank, in full

The question, the answer marked, the reason it is the answer, and the authority it rests on. Nothing is held back on this page and nothing is held back in a run.

OntarioRules of the road

You are riding straight through on a green light. An oncoming driver is waiting to turn left across your path and is looking directly at you.

  1. Eye contact means the driver has seen you, so hold your speed
  2. Slow, cover the brakes and keep a way out, because the driver may still turn across you
  3. Accelerate so you clear the intersection before the driver can move
  4. Ride the centre line so the driver is forced to look at you

The answer is B

A motorcycle is a narrow shape with no width to judge, so drivers read it as further away and slower than it really is. A driver can look straight at you and still decide the gap belongs to them, which is why the answer is speed in hand and an escape path rather than trust in the look.

How the M1 knowledge test passes

You can sit it from age 16.

Fees and rules change, so check the record itself before you pay for anything. The date beside each figure is the day we last read it.

What Ontario Ministry of Transportation does not publish

These are the fields the licensing body leaves out. They stay blank here rather than being filled with another province's number or with an estimate.

  • No published figure for the question count.
  • No published figure for the pass mark.

A run built on a missing length draws the whole bank instead of guessing at one, and the panel before the first question says so.

Questions people ask about this test

How many questions are on the G1 test?

Forty. The kiosk gives you 20 questions on road signs and 20 on rules of the road, and it scores the two sections separately.

How many mistakes can you make on the G1 test?

Four in each section. You need 16 correct out of 20 in road signs and 16 correct out of 20 in rules of the road, so a fifth wrong answer in either section ends your chance of passing that section.

What does the G1 test cost in Ontario?

The standard package is $159.75. It covers the G1 knowledge test, the vision test and your first G2 road test, so the road test is already paid for. A knowledge test retake on its own costs $15.75.

What happens if I pass one section and fail the other?

You have not passed the G1. Both sections have to reach 16 out of 20 on the same attempt, and each is judged on its own, so the next step is a retake at $15.75.

How long do I have to hold a G1 before the road test?

Twelve months, or eight months if you finish an approved driver education course. The course is the only way to shorten that wait.

How many DriveTest centres are there in Ontario?

More than 55 across the province, all run by the same contracted operator on behalf of the ministry.

Are some DriveTest centres easier than others?

The published results say yes. Road test pass rates measured across Ontario centres span about 30 percentage points from the strongest centre to the weakest, which is why booking location gets argued about so much.

How long does the whole Ontario licence take?

Roughly 20 to 24 months from a fresh G1 to a full G, depending on how fast you clear each hold and how soon you can get a road test booking.
