Before you sit the G1 test

What identification should I take to the G1 test?

DriveTest checks identity when you apply for the Ontario G1. Bring original, valid documents showing your legal name and full date of birth. A Canadian passport or Ontario Photo Card can meet both checks with one document. If the documents show different names, bring the document that connects them. DriveTest normally does not accept a photocopy, even a certified one, unless its document list says otherwise.

The list for a first Ontario licence is different from the list for a licence exchange. If you have already held a licence elsewhere, check the exchange requirements before treating the new-driver ID list as the whole application.

What happens at DriveTest before and after I pass G1?

At the centre, a customer service agent handles your application and checks your vision before you sit the G1 knowledge test. Bring the glasses or contact lenses you use for driving. DriveTest offers the knowledge test without a booking and asks applicants to arrive with enough time before closing for registration and testing.

A pass leads to a paper temporary G1 licence. It lets you drive under G1 conditions while the plastic photo card is prepared. The paper licence is valid for 90 days. If the card has not arrived by the expiry date on the paper licence, DriveTest directs you to ServiceOntario for an extension.

Can DriveTest read the G1 questions aloud?

The computer kiosks have an audio function. Tell the DriveTest agent before entering the test room, or as soon as you realize you need it. You do not need an appointment for kiosk audio, and DriveTest provides disposable headphones. Wired personal headphones with a standard jack are also allowed.

A verbal test or an interpreter is arranged differently: DriveTest asks you to make an appointment. A sign-language interpreter must be arranged by the applicant, with reasonable necessary costs reimbursed by DriveTest. Requests for a separate accessible space go through its accommodation review before an appointment is set. That is why an applicant seeking a room accommodation should contact DriveTest before visiting as a walk-in.

What does the G1 vision check measure?

DriveTest checks both how clearly you see letters or numbers and how far your side vision extends. The agent uses a screen reader and asks you to identify a flashing light on either side. The G1 standard is at least 20/50 with both eyes open and a total horizontal field of 120 degrees, with corrective lenses allowed.

If you need glasses or contacts to meet the standard, the licence can carry an X condition requiring them while driving. If the centre test does not meet the standard, DriveTest provides a form for a vision specialist. You can bring the completed form back to a centre and continue the application.

At a four way stop the first driver to stop goes first. When two drivers stop together, the one on the right has the right of way. The rule exists so that two people facing the same doubt settle it the same way instead of guessing at each other.
