ICBC, Before you take your knowledge test (form MV2654)verified 2026-08-28

The format above is the one Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) sets, and it is on the page before anything else, because the numbers are what you plan around. Every row carries the record it was read from and the date it was checked.

  • Sixty questions, and 48 correct to pass. It is the longest knowledge test ICBC runs, and you get 75 minutes for it.
  • Air brakes are built into it, so this one test covers both.
  • The skip button is switched off on the combined Class 1 and air brake test.
  • A road signs test sits alongside it at the learner stage. ICBC does not say whether those signs questions are counted inside the 60.
  • There is no limit on attempts and no training you have to finish first, but Class 1 entry level training is required before you can be licensed.
  • You need a full Class 5 or 6 licence, a clean enough driving record and a commercial medical.
  • The commercial learner licence lasts a year, and renewing it means passing the knowledge test again.

  • 60 questions written for the Class 1 knowledge test, each with the authority it rests on
  • Free to sit, with no account and nothing held back until you pay
  • Every run free, with the whole bank open and no part held back

The real test is 60 questions with a 75 minute limit. Nothing here is timed unless the real exam is timed, and nothing is held back except the answers the real exam holds back too.

One question from the bank, in full

The question, the answer marked, the reason it is the answer, and the authority it rests on. Nothing is held back on this page and nothing is held back in a run.

British ColumbiaRules of the road

A spring brake is held in the released position while you drive. What actually holds it off?

  1. The driver keeping the parking control pushed in
  2. Air pressure pushing against a strong spring
  3. A mechanical latch that the spring locks into
  4. The rotation of the wheel, which pulls the shoe clear

The answer is B

A spring brake contains a powerful spring that is trying to apply the brake all the time, and air pressure is the only thing holding that spring compressed. Driving is therefore the state that has to be maintained, and braking is what the unit falls back to on its own. That single point explains almost everything else the system does.
