Ontario road tests
Ontario G2 road test vs G road test
The first Ontario road test checks everyday vehicle control. The second adds higher speed roads and a highway driving declaration.

The G2 test is the G1 exit test for basic driving. The G test is the G2 exit test for more advanced driving, including a highway component.
Ontario’s G2 road test and G road test are different stages. The first moves a G1 driver to G2 by checking basic driving on local roads. The second moves a G2 driver to a full G and includes higher speed driving. You normally need 12 months at each stage before the next test. A ministry-approved beginner course can shorten only the G1 wait, to eight months. DriveTest publishes separate fees for the two road tests.
The names cause avoidable confusion. A booking labelled “Class G2 road test” is the test taken while you hold G1. A booking labelled “Class G road test” is the test taken while you hold G2. Read the licence you have now and the licence you want next. The examiner will still expect ordinary safe driving at both stages, but the route and the experience you must declare differ.
The decision in one comparison
The ministry’s current description lists turns, stopping, parallel parking, one-way streets, lane changes, three-point turns, residential streets and traffic controls for the G2 test. For the G test it names major roads and expressways, merging on and off, appropriate speed and space, signalling, turns, curves, lane changes, intersections and business areas. Those lists describe emphasis, not an exemption from observing signs, checking mirrors or yielding correctly on the other test.
DriveTest says the G2 test usually takes about 20 minutes and the G test about 30 minutes. Those are descriptions of a usual test, not guaranteed appointment lengths or a promise that every route contains the same manoeuvres. The current modified G test at full-time centres and temporary road test locations leaves out some items already checked at G2. Part-time Travel Points still use the standard G test, which is a reason to check the location when preparing.

What the first examiner is looking for
At G1, your practice has been supervised. The first road test asks whether you can handle ordinary traffic well enough to drive independently at G2. The Ontario ministry names basic actions that occur repeatedly in a town: turns, stops, lane changes, signals and signs. Parallel parking and a three-point turn are on the published list. Residential neighbourhoods matter because their driveways, parked vehicles and intersections ask for careful observation at a lower speed.
A learner can become absorbed in the named manoeuvre and neglect the drive between manoeuvres. The list is not a set of isolated tricks. A safe parallel park starts with choosing a lawful, suitable place and noticing people or traffic nearby. A left turn requires judging the gap, position and right of way before steering. The official list supports practising the whole sequence, not rehearsing a wheel movement with no traffic around it.
The G1 licence has restrictions during preparation. Ontario says a G1 driver must have an eligible accompanying driver, must not drive in the restricted overnight period, and generally must not drive on 400-series highways or listed high speed expressways. There is an exception when the accompanying person is an Ontario-certified driving instructor. Practise the first test on roads you may legally use with the right supervisor, then work on faster roads after you receive G2.

The G test has changed at many locations
Ontario says the G road test at full-time DriveTest centres and temporary road test locations currently omits parallel parking, roadside stops, three-point turns and residential neighbourhood driving because those were covered in the G2 test. The same official page says it still includes major roads and expressways, merging, maintaining speed and space, signalling, turns, curves, lane changes, intersections and business areas. The G test is therefore more than a short stretch on a highway. The examiner sees how you enter, travel among other vehicles and leave, then how you handle the remaining road network.
DriveTest calls this a temporary modification until further notice. Its road test page also states that part-time Travel Points continue to offer the standard G test. Treat that distinction as a live booking detail: check the location’s current information before deciding to leave a skill out of practice. A manoeuvre omitted from one version of the route is still a driving skill you may need on a normal trip. The change should guide preparation, not become a reason to avoid learning it.

What highway experience means before the appointment
The MTO says you must have experience driving on highways with speed limits of at least 80 km/h before the G2 exit test, and must complete a Declaration of Highway Driving Experience. DriveTest says the declaration is checked before a Class G road test. If you do not have the required experience, it warns that the appointment can be cancelled and part of the road test fee lost. Do not leave that form to memory on test morning.
DriveTest gives the declaration a concrete minimum: at least five drives on qualifying roads in the previous three months. It asks how often you drove there and the average length of those trips. Qualifying roads include highways posted at 80 km/h or more and the named 400-series highways and expressways on its page. Five quick passes through a local 50 km/h street do not meet that description. If you have not made the qualifying trips, practise before booking rather than guessing on the form. DriveTest says an appointment cancelled for insufficient experience loses 50% of the road test fee.
Highway preparation should follow the actions the ministry actually lists: reaching a suitable speed for a merge, finding a safe gap, signalling, keeping space, changing lanes when safe and leaving the road without a late or abrupt movement. The test is not a contest to reach the highest number on a speedometer. The published wording is about an appropriate speed and space. That depends on the posted limit, traffic and conditions on the route.
A G2 holder may drive independently on all Ontario roads, including the major highways named in the G1 restrictions, subject to the G2 conditions. That is the period for building the experience required by the declaration. A driver who has spent the stage only on local trips should arrange lawful supervised coaching or suitable practice before making a declaration about highway use. The form asks for actual experience, not confidence that you could manage a merge on the day.

A worked example from G1 to full G
Say a hypothetical new driver in Ottawa passes the knowledge and vision tests, receives G1, and later completes a ministry-approved beginner driver education course. Ontario’s published minimum for the first road test becomes eight months with G1 rather than the usual 12. The driver books the Class G2 road test, pays no separate first-test charge if the original G1 package still covers that attempt, and prepares the basic skills on the ministry list. Passing moves the driver to G2.
The next clock begins at G2. The approved course does not shorten the stated 12-month G2 period before the G test. During that period, the driver can practise on Ontario highways within G2 conditions and keep an honest record of the experience needed for the highway declaration. The published individual Class G road test fee is $91.25. The driver selects the G booking, checks whether the centre uses the modified test or is a Travel Point, and completes the required declaration.
This example uses the ordinary graduated path. Someone with accepted out-of-province or foreign experience can have a different eligibility decision under Ontario’s exchange rules. A driver whose licence is near expiry also needs to check requalification rules. Neither exception changes what the two road tests are designed to assess.

What the fees actually cover
DriveTest’s published G1 package costs $159.75 and includes the knowledge test, the first Class G2 road test and a five-year licence. If you are following that route and have not used the included attempt, the separate $53.75 G2 road test price is not an additional amount to pay for that first booking. An extra G2 attempt is a separate road test charge. The G test is not included in that original package; DriveTest lists it at $91.25.
Fees can change, and a foreign exchange or requalification path may not be the ordinary G1 package. The right question at the counter is what has already been paid on your driver record and what this appointment still requires. DriveTest says a novice driver cannot book a road test after the licence expiry date. If the booking is approaching that date, confirm eligibility before paying for travel or arranging a vehicle.

Two preparations, shared driving habits
For G2, use a varied local route with real intersections, parked cars, traffic lights and places to perform the listed parking and turning tasks lawfully. Ask an accompanying driver or instructor to watch where you look before you move, how you position the car for turns and whether you actually finish at the right place. A quiet empty car park can teach control, but it cannot show how you respond to a pedestrian or a vehicle arriving at an intersection.
For G, practise entering and exiting a higher speed road at different traffic levels. Build a routine of looking far enough ahead to plan the exit, checking mirrors and blind spots before a lane change, and leaving space in front. Also practise the business area and intersection driving still listed for the test. A route that feels familiar is useful only if the habits transfer to another road.
If the question is how an examiner records mistakes, read our separate guide on Ontario road test marking. Ontario does not publish an allowed-error count for you to use as a target. Preparing to make a certain number of mistakes would distract from what the test checks: safe, repeatable driving decisions throughout the route.

At the centre, before either route begins
DriveTest does not supply the car. Bring a Class G vehicle that is in good working order; it can be owned, borrowed or rented. Check the vehicle before the appointment, including whether recording devices can be disabled as DriveTest requires for the test. Bring your current licence, needed glasses or contact lenses, enough fuel and the booking confirmation. DriveTest asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes early. These steps apply to either road test and can prevent a test from being declared out of order before your driving is assessed.
After check-in, the examiner explains the test and checks the car. Ask about an instruction you do not understand before starting, since the examiner cannot coach during the drive. DriveTest provides a verbal summary afterward and says a scoresheet can be obtained. If you fail, use that record to identify the repeated behaviour to practise. This guide explains the difference between test stages; the separate marking guide explains what the examiner records.

Worth remembering
- G2 road test means G1 to G2; G road test means G2 to full G.
- Approved beginner education can shorten the G1 stage to eight months, not the G2 stage.
- The current G test at full-time centres omits some G2 manoeuvres, but Travel Points use the standard test.
- Complete the highway driving declaration using experience you actually have.
- Check what the original package already covers before paying for another test.
Questions people ask
Is parallel parking on the Ontario G road test?
Ontario says the current modified G test at full-time DriveTest centres and temporary locations omits it. Part-time Travel Points continue to use the standard G test. Check the location and current test description when you book.
Can I take the G test after a beginner education course without waiting a year at G2?
No. Ontario describes the approved-course reduction for the G1 period before the first road test. It still requires 12 months with G2 before the G road test on the ordinary graduated path.
Do I need actual highway driving before the G test?
Yes. The MTO requires highway driving experience and a declaration before the G2 exit test. DriveTest says an appointment can be cancelled, with a fee consequence, if the required experience is missing.
How many errors can I make on either test?
Ontario does not publish one numeric allowance. See the separate guide on how road tests are marked for the examiner’s assessment and the behaviours that can end a test.
