The waiting periods come from the Ontario licence stages in our data layer, and the length of the window from the Ontario question bank, which carries its own citation. Both name Ontario Ministry of Transportation, G1 licensing rules and DriveTest fee schedule and were checked on 2026-08-27.
What this actually calculates
Three sums, each one shown so you can check it by hand.
The first sum is the waiting period. You cannot take the G2 road test the week after the knowledge test, and an approved beginner driver education course is the one thing that shortens the wait. The G1 stage runs for twelve months before you may attempt the G2 road test, and an approved driver education course cuts that to eight.
The second is the window. The G1 does not sit there until you feel ready. You get five years from the day you receive your G1 to pass both road tests and reach a full G licence. That date is inherited by the G2, which is the part people are surprised by: passing the first road test does not restart anything.
The third is the room between them. That gap is what you are actually managing, because it has to cover the booking wait at your centre and any road test that does not go your way. A margin that looks generous on paper closes quickly when the nearest appointment is three months out.

Everything else here is worked out from figures our data layer carries with a named source. Where we do not hold a figure, the line says so and stays blank rather than filling itself in.

Our data layer does not yet hold a sourced waiting period for the G2 stage, so this tool will not put a date here. Ask DriveTest or the ministry for the wait that applies to you.
Tick the driver education box in the calculator above and the second line moves earlier, which moves the room on the third line in the same direction. The last line does not move, because the window is counted from the knowledge test and nothing you do afterwards extends it.
What drivers say happens when the window closes
Reported by drivers, not published by the ministry
- Some drivers describe getting back into the sequence by sitting the knowledge test again soon after their window closed, rather than losing the road tests they had already passed.
- Others describe being charged something at the counter that extended the time they had, rather than being sent back to the beginning.
Both of those come from drivers describing their own experience. Neither is published by the ministry as far as we can find, so we will not put a timeframe or an amount on either, and neither is something to plan around. If your window is running short, the thing that actually helps is booking the road test now.

What this calculator ignores
Assumptions and limits
- It counts calendar months from the day you passed the knowledge test. It does not know the booking wait at your centre, and at a busy one that wait is the part that decides whether a date is reachable at all.
- It holds no waiting period between the G2 and the G road test, so it prints no G road test date rather than a plausible one.
- It does not know about a licence that lapsed, a suspension, a medical review or a licence exchanged from another jurisdiction. Any of those moves the dates and none of them is something this page can see.
- It is a reading of published waiting periods and not advice about your own licence. Your licensing body is the authority on that.

Because we do not hold the waiting period it would need. Nothing in our data layer states how long a G2 has to be held before the G road test, and putting a plausible number there would be worse than leaving it out. Ask DriveTest or the ministry for the wait that applies to you.
