Who can take the ICBC knowledge test online?

Two tests are covered. The passenger vehicle test is the one most people call the learner's test: it leads to a class 7 learner licence, the first step toward a full class 5 licence to drive a car. The motorcycle test is the one for classes 6 and 8. If you are starting out in a car or on a motorcycle, the online route is open to you.

The commercial knowledge tests for classes 1 to 4 and the air brake test are not part of what ICBC describes for the online route. If you are working toward one of those, check ICBC's current page before you plan around sitting it at home.

How does the online knowledge test work?

You register first, and from that moment you have up to 72 hours to start. Register when you know you have a free, quiet block in the next three days, not a week before you intend to sit it. Once you start, you have 45 minutes to finish in a single session, so there is no stopping halfway and coming back later.

ICBC asks for a computer with a webcam. The $15 test fee is paid online rather than at a counter, and it is charged for each attempt.

The time allowed is the same 45 minutes the office test gives you. ICBC's figures for the passenger vehicle test at an office are 50 questions with 40 correct needed to pass, which is 80 percent, and our ICBC knowledge test page lists them with their source. For the motorcycle test, ICBC's knowledge test sheet describes the online version as the same test you would sit on the touch screen at an office: 40 questions, with 32 correct to pass.

Do you still have to go to an ICBC office?

Yes. Passing online does not give you a licence. You still visit a driver licensing office for the licence itself, and the licence fee is paid there, separately from the $15 you paid for the test.

ICBC's learner stage asks for a vision check as well as the knowledge test, so treat the office visit as the second half of the same step rather than an errand for later. You are not a learner driver until you walk out with the 7L, and the L sign and the supervised driving conditions start from that day, not from the day you passed online.

What happens if you fail the online test?

You wait, and each new attempt costs another $15. For the passenger vehicle test, ICBC's wait between attempts is 7 days. For the motorcycle test, ICBC's knowledge test sheet puts the wait at a day in person or 24 hours online.

A week is long enough to fix one weak subject properly. Look at which questions you missed rather than at the score, because the pattern in the misses tells you more than the number does, and spend the wait on those topics before you register again.

Is the online test easier than the one at the office?

Nothing ICBC publishes suggests it is. The clock is the same 45 minutes, ICBC describes the motorcycle version as the same test as the one on the office touch screen, and a timer runs just as fast in your own room as it does at a counter.

What changes is when you start. At an office you arrive, sit and finish. Online, you choose the moment, which makes it tempting to start before you are ready. Treat the 72 hour window as a deadline you set for yourself, and register only once you are passing full timed practice runs with room to spare.

What else is changing for new drivers in British Columbia?

A second change takes effect on 19 October 2026, and it is about the end of the process rather than the start. A second road test has been the route from a novice licence to a full class 5 licence. From that date, ICBC reads the driving record it already holds instead.
