The shape is almost always a yellow diamond with a black border and a black symbol or arrow. The one exception in this set is the railway advance sign, which is a yellow circle with a black X, kept round on purpose so it stands out from the diamonds around it well before you reach the tracks.

The sign is about drivers arriving from a road that joins yours, and they have to fit into gaps in your traffic. Adjusting your speed, or moving over a lane where it is safe to, costs you nothing and gives them the room they need.

A merge sign warns that vehicles are about to enter the road you are already on, usually from a ramp. Your job is to adjust your speed or move over where it is safe, because the joining driver has a short lane and much less room to work with than you do.

The sign warns the traffic already on the road that vehicles are about to blend in from another one, often from a ramp with a short lane to do it in. Your job is to make that easy: adjust your speed and spacing, or move over if the next lane is clear. The joining driver has far less room to solve the problem than you do.

Merging works when both drivers give a little: the joining driver looks for a gap and the through driver makes one available. Braking hard for a merge is nearly as bad as ignoring it, because the driver behind you did not see what you saw. A small lift or an early lane change costs you almost nothing.

The joining driver has to give way, but merging only works when the through traffic leaves somewhere to go. Sharp braking and a late burst of speed both remove the gap the other driver was aiming for, and the vehicle behind you is left guessing what you are doing.
