Regulatory signs
Keep to the right of the divider or island ahead.
Stay right of the island or divider ahead rather than passing it on the left.
Most are white with black text or a black symbol, or plain white with a red border. Two shapes are used for exactly one meaning each and nothing else: the eight sided red stop sign and the downward pointing red triangle yield sign, so you can still read them by outline alone in poor light. A red circle with a diagonal red bar always means the thing inside the circle is not allowed.
A regulatory sign states a rule you must follow. It carries the force of law behind it, not just advice, so ignoring one is a traffic offence in its own right.

This sign is mounted on a small island in the middle of the road ahead of you. What must you do?
Pass the island on its right side
The sign sits on the obstruction itself and sends traffic around it in one direction only. Islands like this separate opposing streams of traffic, so passing on the wrong side puts you into the path of vehicles coming the other way.

Pass to the right of the island
The sign is fixed to an obstruction such as a median, a traffic island or a bridge support, and it tells you which side of it to take. It is not a general instruction about lane choice, so it does not mean that slower traffic must move over for the rest of the road.

Pass to the right of the island
The sign tells you which side of the divider belongs to your direction, and taking the other side puts you at the island or into oncoming traffic. These dividers usually protect a left turn bay or a crossing point, so the side you take is not a matter of preference. Read the arrow before you commit to a lane.

Pass to the right of the island
The sign tells you which side of a divider, island or obstruction to take, and here that side is the right. Islands are built where two streams of traffic must be kept apart, so taking the wrong side puts you head on into the other stream. Being on the correct side is also what lets you read any signal or sign mounted on the island.

The right side of the island
The sign directs traffic to pass to the right of the obstruction. Keeping to that side preserves the intended traffic flow around the island.

Where a roadway divides around a structure, the sign marks which stream belongs to you. Reading it late is what puts a driver on the wrong side of a divider with no room and no time to correct.
