British Columbia, test change
Will my BC road test use a tablet from 14 October?
Published
Starting 14 October 2026, ICBC examiners at select British Columbia driver licensing locations will use tablets to record Class 1 road test results instead of paper marking sheets. ICBC says scores will be calculated immediately and sent to customers by email. The pilot starts with Class 1, then moves to other commercial classes before passenger and motorcycle tests. Booking, identification, fees, marking criteria and the examiner's authority stay the same, according to ICBC's Modernization of driver licensing page.

Which BC road tests will use tablets from 14 October?
The first phase covers Commercial Class 1 road tests at select driver licensing locations. ICBC has not named those locations on its announcement page. A Class 1 candidate should therefore check with ICBC or the office handling the appointment rather than assume that every examiner will have a tablet on 14 October 2026. The date is the start of a phased pilot, not the date when every road test in the province switches over.
If you are taking a Class 7 road test for a novice car licence, or a motorcycle road test, the opening phase does not cover your test. ICBC says it will move from Class 1 to other commercial classes, and only later to passenger and motorcycle classes. The announcement gives no start date for those later groups. Your appointment remains a road test with an ICBC examiner regardless of which marking sheet the examiner uses.
How will I get my road test result?
The examiner records the result in tablet software, which ICBC says calculates the score immediately and provides it by email. The candidate still takes a road test; ICBC describes the tablet as the examiner's tool for recording the result.
Check that ICBC has the right email address for you before the appointment. Keep the result email. If you need to understand a mark or prepare for another attempt, ask the examiner how to get feedback on your own test. ICBC advises people retaking a road test to review their previous result form. The tablet announcement promises an emailed score, but does not describe the format of detailed feedback.
Do I need to book differently or bring anything new?
ICBC says the pilot does not change the booking process, required identification, fees or other testing requirements. Keep your appointment and follow the instructions for your licence class. ICBC has announced no new device or booking step for the candidate.
ICBC's road test preparation page tells candidates to arrive at their check-in time with primary and secondary identification, payment and a safe, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate. An unsafe vehicle, or one that does not meet legal requirements, may cause a test to be cancelled.
For a Class 1 test, follow the vehicle and appointment instructions ICBC gives for that class. The general road test preparation page does not replace them.
Will a tablet change how the examiner scores my driving?
ICBC says its marking standards and scoring criteria remain the same. The examiner also keeps the same decision-making authority. The software records marks and calculates a score, but the examiner still observes the drive and makes the assessment. There is no different pass standard for a candidate because an examiner is carrying a tablet.
Does this change the BC learner or novice licence path?
No. The tablet pilot is separate from ICBC's graduated licensing change scheduled for 19 October 2026. That later change removes the second road test for eligible novice drivers moving to a restricted Class 5 licence through a Driving Record Assessment. The first Class 7 road test, which takes a car learner to the novice stage, still exists. The tablet pilot neither removes that first test nor brings the old second test back.
What this means if you are learning to drive
- If your Class 1 road test is on or after 14 October, ask ICBC whether your location is in the opening pilot.
- Keep your booking and bring the identification, payment and vehicle required for your test.
- After a tablet-marked test, look for the result email and ask the examiner how to review your feedback.
- If you hold a Class 7L or 7N, this pilot does not change your test. Check ICBC for later passenger test dates.
